One innovative program is the development
of “transit villages” — communities that are improving their
bus, train, light rail, or ferry mass-transit infrastructure as
an integral part of a municipal Smart Growth plan. Transit
villages relieve highway congestion, reduce commuting time, and
lessen impacts to the environment. The Transit Village
Initiative helps to redevelop and revitalize communities around
transit facilities to make them an appealing choice for people
to live, work, and play, thereby reducing reliance on the
automobile. For this reason, it is an excellent model for Smart
Growth, since it encourages growth where infrastructure and
public transit already exist.
