In 2000 more than $12
billion was invested in industrial R&D, the third-highest
total in the nation. Nearly two thirds of that was in
manufacturing — especially pharmaceuticals, computers, and
electronic products. Princeton’s Pharmaceutical Research
Institute alone spent more than $2 billion in R&D in 2001.

New Jersey has more than
25 contract research centers.

Nearly $60 million in R&D
was outsourced to New Jersey from other parts of the
country.

R&D spending in the
university and college system ranked 17th in the nation in
2001 ($609 million). Rutgers, Princeton, and the University
of Medicine and Dentistry -- all among the top-100 R&D
universities in the country -- accounted for more than $400
million in R&D.

In 2002 New Jersey ranked
seventh in the United States for venture capital investment
with $3.5 billion — the majority in telecommunications,
biotechnology, software, and IT.
